Ron entered the insurance business in 1969 and began specializing in disability insurance. As the opportunity presented itself in 1973, Ron moved from New York City to Houston, Texas.
In Houston, he achieved notoriety and the respect of his peers nationally. During this period, Ron became one of the Charter Member RHU's (Registered Health Underwriters), a designation accredited by the National Association of Health Underwriters.
In 1977 he began his own firm, Ron Cohen Insurance, Inc. and Founded
The Houston Association of Health Underwriters. To this day, he is the only President to have served two terms. Also serving as a Texas State Board member of the Texas Association of Health Underwriters.
Ron has been a top DI Producer for several carriers over the years and has mentored many producers who continue to contact him for copies of his articles (over 200) or thank him for his many webinars they've enjoyed listening to. He continues to inspire Carrier Executives, Brokerages, Claims Reps, Media Reps, Editors, Producers and others within and related to the disability insurance industry.
His alliance with and respect from the media and publications related to disability insurance is obvious. He is now referring other individuals to these sources, so the next generation can come to the forefront with their ideas and suggestions. " It's time for the young to be heard!"
In 2005 Ron Co-Founded the International DI Society.
He has been a guest speaker for many insurance companies, societies, clubs, and several Disability Income Training Council meetings and all agree, his passion for disability is contagious and inspirational.
Ron has been a consultant to several insurers in the design of their disability products as well being contacted by carriers, magazines, and organizations for his opinion. It is not unusual for his name to come up when discussing disability insurance. As everyone in his family has been disabled, he knows all too well, what really happens, "The reality of a disability can be devastating to an entire family."
Ron has been awarded the National Association of Health Underwriters President's Council Lifetime Achievement Award.
In 2008, Ron received what we all believe to be his most cherished honor. The W. Harold Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award. He said, “This is by far, the greatest honor bestowed upon me by my peers and without question, the most emotional moment of my career!"
Dear Ron,
Thank you very much for sending your two articles to me. Both of them are meaningful and well-written. Your writings follow your speech patterns, so when I read any of your articles, I automatically hear your distinctive voice.
I am a student of American History and I have great interest in the War of Independence. My favorite revolutionary person is Thomas Paine. He was the true communicator for the cause and I think of you as the Thomas Paine of the disability insurance income insurance industry.
Kindest personal regards,
Ken Wylie
2007 W. Harold Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient
International DI Society
Congratulations on winning the W. Harold Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award--you richly deserve it. When you asked the people in the audience to stand up if they were ever positively influenced by you, I stood up because of your passion and commitment to DI. People like you and Harold are leaving big shoes for the next generation to fill…not that you are anywhere near retiring from the scene yet. As you said, maybe in 10 years they’ll give you the award again!
Regards,
Gordon Gordon Bess, CLU, FLMI
